About this project

My name is Susan Taylor, and I am a first year master’s student at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo. My main research project focuses on the nature of urban space in Jimbocho and interactions between that urban space and cyberspace through the book trade. This blog is a project for Dr. Jarad Braiterman’s “Mega-Cities: Design Anthropology and Urban Landscapes” class (http://tokyogreenspace.com/2011/04/25/teaching-a-graduate-seminar-at-tokyo-university/).

About me:

I graduated from Georgetown University in 2008 and spent two years working at a Japanese general trading company in Washington, D.C. I am originally from a small town in southern Appalachia. Even though I am from a “緑が多いところ” (a place with abundant greenery), I have been interested in cities for most of my life. My academic interests include: urban culture, urban sociology, urban planning, and transportation design and policy. I also follow international relations in Asia.

In 2009 and 2010, I was able to travel to East Africa, which was a life changing experience. Addis Ababa and Nairobi left a lasting impression on me, and I hope to be able to return to Africa someday.

My hobbies include walking, reading novels, traveling and trying to cook Ethiopian food.
